Re: Because everyone needs a helping hand sometimes

ok,

a) interesting that george bush's re-election was the 4th link returned

b) none of them was particularly funny.

The latter point is particularly interesting. It highlights a problems with search. A BIG problem.

For example, if you searched for "interesting stuff" would you find any? God no. Well, highly likely no, because everyone is interested in different stuff. How do you provide direction for "interesting" (without painstakingly seaching, topic by topic)? Likewise, how do you provide direction for "funny", given that humour is such a subtle, and little understood thing (Scott Adams, writer of Dilbert has a theory, but even for someone who thinks he has a complete understanding, he manages to fall flat incredibly often)

It's.. a tough one..

Re: Because everyone needs a helping hand sometimes

Monkeys are funny in and of themselves.

So I googled "Interesting stuff", went to the top-listed site, and clicked 'informative'.

My conclusion? They don't know either so try to cover all their bases. I found stuff I thuoght was interesting, anyway.

Re: Because everyone needs a helping hand sometimes

by dint of going to a site that, regardless of marketing, basically just put everything up there (much like this one, actually).

the other thing to note was, google didn't bring up the -page- you found interesting, you clicked on from there. So, while google found something that proclaimed to be interesting, it was actually you that found it.

which, pretty much, proves my point.

Re: Because everyone needs a helping hand sometimes

Your point being that me accidentally not clicking "I'm Feeling Lucky" and instead doing it the long way, proves that I'm a bit slow today and relatively easily amused?

I could have told you that. *smile*

But yes. Interesting is a choice.

Re: Because everyone needs a helping hand sometimes

no, not at all.

If I read your comment earlier correctly, you followed google's first link (which, yes, "I'm feeling lucky" would have taken you to), but then the interesting thing you found was actually under ANOTHER link that you clicked from there.

Which, if google were better, it would have found directly.

short version: It took you two clicks, not one, therefore google-search sucks (at this admittedly VERY hard problem).

Ah, ok..

Until you said "VERY HARD" I was thinking "I know someone whose mind does the kind of gymnastics that could produce a search engine that did that."

Then I started thinking about how it'd all be based around a definition of interesting that includes a bunch of variables, and you'd almost have to get people to fill out a form stating what they are interested in, which would kind of defeat the purpose.

Or, you could find out what is interesting to -most- people, and use those things with a wildcard variation mutation (GAs anyone?) thingy thrown in for the Extra Special Notabouthim Quirk Factor.

*thinks*
